About Hymettus Mountain Regional Park

Hymettus Mountain Regional Park occupies the range of Hymettus Mountain, located to the east of Athens in the Attica region of Greece. The park extends over varied terrain dominated by rugged limestone peaks that rise up to approximately 1026 meters at its highest point, Evzonas Peak. It is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with dry hot summers and mild wet winters. Vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean biome, including dense pine forests, aromatic shrubs such as thyme and oregano, and patches of maquis. The area serves as an important green lung for the Athens metropolitan area and is home to diverse wildlife including numerous bird species, small mammals, and endemic flora. Historical significance is found in ancient quarries, Byzantine chapels, and old shepherd trails scattered throughout the park. Visitors are drawn to the network of hiking and mountain biking trails, scenic viewpoints, and opportunities for nature photography. Key landmarks include the Kalogeros Monastery ruins, the chapel of St. John, and various panoramic overlooks that afford impressive views of Athens and the Saronic Gulf. Hymettus Mountain Regional Park appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking easy access to nature near a major urban center and to those interested in combining cultural sites with outdoor activities.
